South Korea's foreign minister says the six-party talks on the DPRK's nuclear weapons programme are still the best option for resolving the standoff.

Speaking at a news conference in Seoul following last week's talks in Beijing, Song Min-soon said he will visit Washington next week. This will be his first trip to the country as South Korea's top foreign diplomat. He will meet with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss ways to push forward the talks.

Song also said the latest round of six-party talks ended with no firm agreement, but some progress was made. All parties agreed to take steps in implementing the "September 19th joint statement", in which the DPRK said it would abandon its nuclear program in exchange for aid and security guarantees.
