Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Qin Gang has said he is not sure whether the current round of six-party talks will end with a joint statement. But he stressed the success of this session depends on joint efforts from all sides to reach a consensus.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Qin Gang said on Thursday that since the six-party talks had been halted for 13 months, some were skeptical about their future. But he said the current round has proved the talks remain strong and vital.

Qin said through consultations and exchanges over the past 13 months, all parties realized the importance of restarting the six-party talks, and of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula by negotiations. Now the situation is different from that of two months ago.

"All sides have discussed about the timetable of this round of talks, and considered it necessary to extend the meeting until Friday. But I am unclear about the possibilities of further extensions, which depend on the outcome of the present talks." Said Qin Gang.

Qin also noted the all parties have yet to prepare a joint statement to finish the talks. He said, "If they can release a new document with all sides' approval and consensus, especially a new consensus reached this time, this is the best outcome."

Qin confirmed that 25 bilateral consultations have been conducted at the Diaoyutai State Guest House in this round. He said the success of the talks depends on the consensus reached by all sides, not just from one or two members. Qin stressed this requires the efforts of all parties.
