Newspapers and other media reporting in the United States, Japan and Russia have had mixed reports on the the first day of the six-party talks.

The Washington Post in the U.S. says that the long-awaited negotiations resumed in an atmosphere of pessimism. It claims that Pyongyang is insisting to be regarded as a nuclear power and the United States is demanding swift action to make the Korean Peninsula nuclear-free.

Japan's Kyodo News quotes its chief delegate Kenichiro Sasae, as saying that Japan cannot accept DPRK's demands as a nuclear state. Earlier reports quoted Sasae saying that Japan's door is always open for bilateral talks with the DPRK.

Interfax news agency in Russia, reported its Foreign Minister Seigei Lavrov says the country is determined to help find solutions that will suit all six parties. Lavrov also says that compromises can be found if all participants display good will and patience.
