During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Suzhou was a prosperous town, and home to many wealthy merchants. It became the fashion among the city’s rich and famous, to lavish their wealth on exquisite gardens. They featured lakes and streams, pavilions and covered walkways, trees and fabulous rocks. In recent times, the city has acquired a brand new garden, thanks to a man whose love of Suzhou’s gardens goes back to when he was a boy.

Yiwu lies in the heart of Zhejiang Province, in China’s East. Not so very long ago, few people outside the region had ever heard of Yiwu. But that’s all changed now. The city has established itself as a major centre of the international trade in small commodities. Yiwu is a city of merchants, and many of them are doing extremely well for themselves. But success, as they say, doesn’t come easily. The wealth enjoyed today by some of Yiwu’s businesspeople, has been gained in the face of considerable adversity.
