Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

The death toll has risen to 70 after a suicide bomb hit a crowded square in central Baghdad. More than 200 people were wounded.

The attack, in Tayaran Square, involved a bomb in a parked car and a suicide car bomb. The two exploded simultaneously, one near a police patrol and the other near a crowd gathering to apply for jobs. The blasts hit about 30 meters apart and set fire to least 10 cars. The square is regularly packed with Iraqi laborers waiting for minibuses and private cars that stop to hire them. Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has blamed the attack on al Qaeda and supporters of former leader Saddam Hussein. He said the terrorist groups are trying to spread chaos by killing and fueling sectarian strife.
