Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

Two car bombs have exploded in a main square in Baghdad, killing at least 54 people including 7 policemen. More than one hundred others were wounded in the explosion.

The coordinated attack, in Tayaran Square, involved a bomb in a parked car and a suicide car bomb. Both exploded simultaneously, one near a police patrol and the other near a crowd of Iraqis gathering to apply for jobs as day laborers.

The explosions occurred about 30 meters apart and set fire to least 10 other cars in the area. Scores of Iraqis gather in the square early in the morning to wait for minibuses or private cars that stop and take them on as construction workers, cleaners or painters for the day. The suicide car bomber appeared to have driven into a crowd and set off his explosives as the nearby parked car bomb went off.
