Liao Xiaoyi has been working with ecological residential experts and farmers to build Daping into what she calls – the LOHO Village. The core, she says, is to realize life in harmony. She raised five million yuan, or some 70 million US dollars, to carry out her project.

Construction is well underway. All 80 households supported by her project are expected to move in by mid-June. The new homes feature traditional western Sichuan residential characteristics. More importantly, they are designed to be environmentally friendly.

Liao Xiaoyi's goal is not only to introduce sustainable houses into Daping, but also a sustainable way of making a living. Many farmers now use organic fertilizer on their patches, instead of pesticides as before.

Liao Xiaoyi said, "Like many other villages in China, Daping village still faces serious environmental challenges. For example, lime mines destroy environment here a lot. We are trying to persuade farmers to choose sustainable income."
