US envoy to Middle East visits Israel

US envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell, says the US endorses a "two-state solution" to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Mitchell made the comment on Thursday after meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman in Jerusalem.

Mitchell stressed that US policy prefers a Palestinian state living in harmony alongside Israel. Lieberman admitted that previous road-maps to peace have come to a dead end.

He says the recently-elected Israeli government should work out new plans to solve the historical matter, but did not suggest any details.

Later on Thursday, Mitchell met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Netanyahu told Mitchell that Israel would not accept the creation of another Hamas-controlled entity on its border.
