An apparently coordinated series of explosions and indiscriminate firing took place late on Wednesday night.

Indian police say they shot dead four gunmen and have arrested nine suspects. Troops have begun entering two five-star hotels where western hostages are being held.

Local TV reported that assailants attacked the landmark Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai late on Wednesday night, taking hostages including Western tourists.

Witnesses say up to three-hundred people were inside the city's best-known hotel when gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles stormed into the building.

Rescue operations are underway, as troops position themselves to save the hostages. Meanwhile, firefighters are working to put out a fire in the hotel.
