US senator Barack Obama has reveled in his new-found status as the likely Democratic nominee. It signals a fierce fight for the Republican Party over states it once considered strongholds.

Obama was holding two events in the southern state of Virginia, long considered Republican ground. But this year, Democrats sense opportunity, in part because of Obama's very strong showing in the primary.

Obama campaigned in Virginia two days after clinching the Democratic nomination. He'll be the first African-American to lead a major party's ticket for the White House.

Obama's appearance came a day after Hillary Clinton announced she would likely suspend her presidential campaign this Saturday, and throw her support behind Obama.
