In the US, Illinois senator Barack Obama is talking tougher about his terms for diplomacy with Iran. He's also backed Israel's stance on Jerusalem in his first foreign policy speech since winning the Democratic party's presidential nomination.

Obama promised to stop Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to work for peace with a Palestinian state alongside Israel. But he insists Jerusalem should be the undivided capital of Israel and any agreement with the Palestinians must preserve Israel's identity as a Jewish state with secure, recognized and defensible borders.

Obama is trying to win over wary Jewish voters over his commitment to Israel. He's been countering a rumor campaign suggesting he is a Muslim and that his advisers have a pro-Arab bent.
