Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi has expressed concern for people affected by the country's heaviest snowfall in decades. Wu Yi, who heads a work group from the State Council, is on an inspection tour of Jiangxi Province. She is urging local governments to do their utmost to assist people.

Wu encouraged workers struggling to repair electricity lines to speed up the repair work so that local residents could enjoy the Lunar New Year festivities.

During her visit in Jiangxi Provincial Electricity Transfer Center on Sunday, Wu Yi learned more about the local electricity supply, coal reserves and the transport situation.

Wu says the struggle against the severe winter weather is set to become increasingly difficult as more snow and sleet is expected in the province in the coming days.

She is urging local officials to intensify efforts to ensure the electricity supply, to clear roads and help people affected by the winter storm especially those whose homes were destroyed.

On Saturday, Wu Yi inspected the electricity and water supply in Dongxiang County.

Wu encouraged workers struggling to repair electricity lines to speed up the repair work so that local residents could enjoy the Lunar New Year festivities. But she also told the workers to pay attention to their own safety.

The vice premier also met stranded passengers as well as employees at the railway station of Nanchang, capital of Jiangxi Province.

And Chinese state councilor, Chen Zhili, arrived in the stricken province of Zhejiang on Sunday to help direct relief work.

Chen urged the local authorities to speed up the de-icing work on the freeways and to repair damaged electricity transmission equipment.

She also told local officials to be prepared for the possible worsening of the situation in coming days and to spare no efforts in assisting residents.
