Special Report:   Giant Panda

Animal protection authorities in Sichuan province have issued a warning that giant pandas living in the wild face a possible food shortage.

According to officials, nine varieties of bamboo, out of the twenty that pandas eat, have been flowering for at least two years. Once they flower they continue to seed and die. These species of bamboo account for 30 percent of the panda's diet. Their loss would pose a great threat to wild pandas.

A similar food shortage occurred in the mid-nineteen eighties and resulted in hundreds of pandas dying.
