Gu Mingde, Dep. directoe of research of People's Bank of China, Shanghai HQ, said, "In our lending policies, we will require all commercial banks to take into full consideration factors like energy conservation and environmental protection. It's an increasingly important issue."

In addition, Board Chairman of the Sweden based Investor AB, Jacob Wallenberg, noticed that Shanghai produces 100,000 tons of electronic garbage a year. He proposed that manufacturers shoulder the responsibility of recycling.

In face of all the proposals from business leaders, Mayor Han Zheng said the Shanghai government will attach great importance to energy conservation and environmental protection. This is because both will be key factors to Shanghai's sustainable development.

Mayor of Shanghai Han Zheng said, "We would rather slow down the development and absorb some losses in economic sums. But energy conservation and environmental protection issues must be placed as priorities."

Since 1989, participants of the International Business Leaders' Advisory Council for Mayor of Shanghai have contributed their insights to Shanghai's development. Next year's forum is slated for November 2nd, when participants will focus on Shanghai in the process of globalization.
