As Shanghai witnesses rapid economic growth, it's also striving to be much "greener". Global business leaders gathered in the city on Sunday to brainstorm ways for local officials to build a greener place to live.

The meeting was on the sidelines of the 19th International Business Leaders' Advisory Council for the Mayor of Shanghai. This year focused on how to build a resource conserving, environmentally friendly city.

A total of 33 high ranking overseas business executives attended the one day forum. They offered their advice on building a greener city using three guidelines: government responsibilities, enterprise participation, and public awareness.

CEO of the American International Group, Martin Sullivan said the government plays an important role in alleviating traffic congestion in downtown. He introduced London's practice of charging congestion fees for vehicles entering downtown while investing the income into public transportation. As a result, greenhouse gas emission in downtown was reduced by 15 percent.
