Special Report:   HK 10 Years

HONG KONG, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao said here Sunday that Hong Kong has obtained much experience for the cause of "one country, two systems."

The president made the remarks while addressing a gathering Marking the 10th Anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the third government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The past decade has been ground-breaking in significance for the cause of "one country, two systems," Hu told the gathering.

"We have obtained much valuable experience in this great endeavor," he said.

The president summarized the experience into four major points:

-- Fully appreciating and implementing "one country, two systems." The principle is an integral concept. "One country" is the prerequisite of "two systems."

-- Strictly complying with the Basic Law. The supreme status of the Basic Law in Hong Kong's legal system must be upheld and the Basic Law must be strictly abided by.

-- Giving high priority to promoting economic development and improving people's well-being. Only with continued economic development, can Hong Kong improve the life for its people, maintain stability and develop a democratic system that suits its actual conditions.

-- Upholding social harmony and stability. People from different social groups and sectors in Hong Kong have different interests and priorities, but the vast majority of the Hong Kong people love the motherland and Hong Kong. There will be no problem or difference that can not be settled.

The Chinese president arrived here Friday to attend celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inauguration of the third-term government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
