In Washington, US President George W. Bush has met for talks with Shinzo Abe on the Japanese Prime Minister's first official visit since coming into office last year.

The leaders are set to cover concerns relating to trade, security and the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue. But they're also keen to put on a public display of their alliance and to build on their personal ties.

Analysts say both men will be loong for respite from criticism that has followed them of late. Abe's support rating has plunged at home with voters angry over scandals involving members of his Cabinet.

Bush also faces an opposition-controlled Congress incensed over his handling of the war in Iraq.
