Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he's deeply sorry for the "comfort women" who were forced to serve as sex slaves for Japanese forces during World War II. Abe made the statement during a meeting on Thursday with members of the US Congress.

He expressed his sympathy for the former, "comfort women". But his fresh apology comes amid lingering anger and controversy sparked last month. That's when Abe claimed that there was no proof that Japan's wartime government or Imperial army forced women to serve Japanese soldiers as sex slaves during World War Two.

This marks Abe's first official visit to the US since becoming prime minister. Abe has met with President George W. Bush. He's also expected to make a public display of what both countries consider a crucial alliance.
