HONG KONG, April 4 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government Wednesday launched a regional tree planting event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the city's handover to the motherland.

More than 100,000 shrubs and trees will be planted in all 18 districts in Hong Kong in the next two months to mark the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR Region.

Speaking at the launch ceremony for the Eastern District Tree Planting Day on Wednesday, the Acting Permanent Secretary for HomeAffairs of Hong Kong Donald Tong said the tree planting program was the most popular district greening activity, through which public green awareness was promoted while encouraging people to support greening.

"The active participation of the community will strengthen the building of a sustainable green living environment and enhances our sense of belonging to the community," Tong said.

Some 3,000 shrubs and trees, including Bauhinia Blakeana, Lagerstroemia Speciosa, Ixora Williamsii Sunkist and Zephyranthes Grandiflora, were planted on Wednesday by 350 primary school students in the Eastern district.

The Tree Planting and Greening Project, a joint tree planting program with the Hong Kong Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong Home Affairs Department, community groups and local schools, will be held in April and May, as one of the major celebration events for the 10th anniversary.
