Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

Saddam Hussein is back in court, despite having written earlier to the chief judge saying he would no longer attend proceedings.

In his letter, Saddam said he could no longer put up with "continued insults" from the chief judge and prosecutors. He said he had been repeatedly banned from speaking, and he and his lawyers had had no chance to respond to witnesses and prosecutors. Saddam and six of his aides are currently on trial for alleged genocide carried out during Operation Anfal in the late 1980s in which prosecutors say up to 180,000 Kurds were killed. They face a second death penalty if convicted.
