Special Report:   Iraq in Transition

Saddam Hussein was in court again on Tuesday, despite having written to the chief judge saying he would not longer attend the proceedings.

In his letter, Saddam had said he could no longer put up with "continued insults" from the chief judge and prosecutors. He said had been repeatedly banned from speaking, and he his lawyers had had no chance to respond to the allegations submitted by witnesses and prosecutors.

Saddam and six of his aides are charged with genocide against Kurds during Operation Anfal, in which prosecutors say up to 180,000 Kurds were killed. They face the death penalty if convicted.
