In the old days, the Bell and Drum Tower built in the Ming Dynasty had always signaled time for the capital. Officials and civilians in Beijing were quite dependent on it until invading Eight-power Allied Forces destroyed the drum in 1900. It has fallen silent ever since.

Sun Yat-sen and the Revolutionary Party

This is a picture of Sun Yat-sen when he was 17, the earliest we could find today. It was taken in Honolulu where he cut his long hair to become a revolutionary. At 46, he became provisional president of Republic of China.

The Su Bao Case

The concession tablet in Museum of History of Shanghai is witness to the history of Shanghai in the past 150 years. After the Opium War, according to Treaty of Nanjing, the Qing court made over a large piece of land to Britain. Since then concessions became an independent kingdom of foreigners.

Japan-Russia War

Lushunkou was situated at the southernmost part of Liaodong Peninsula. For the past century and more it was a strategic place of military contention. On Feb. 8, 1904, 8 days before Spring Festival, the people were in a festive atmosphere. All of a sudden Japanese gunfire bombarded a Russian fleet anchored at Lushunkou. Thus, Japan-Russia War started.

Tong Meng Hui

November 1904 saw Empress Dowager Cixi’s 70th birthday. As a gesture she pardoned a few men involved in the coup d’etat of 1898, but not including Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao.

Five Ministers Went Abroad

In 1905, Sun Yat-sen wrote four big characters: “Wind from All Sides”. They summarized the political situation in China. In November, Min Bao (“People’s Journal”), organ of Tong Meng Hui, began publication in Tokyo. In the opening article of the very first issue, Sun Yat-sen proclaimed for the first time his Three Principles--Nationalism, Democracy, and People´s Livelihood. Min Bao became the best-selling influential magazine of that time.
