President Hu Jintao says the Navy should continue to modernize and enhance its ability to carry out important missions. Hu Jintao is also chairman of the Central Military Commission.

He made the remarks when meeting with veteran officers and model sailors on Friday, a day after the 60th anniversary of the founding of the PLA's naval force.

Hu Jintao thanked the sailors for their contributions to the development of the navy. He said the Navy plays an important role in protecting China's sovereignty, national security and territorial integrity.

President Hu said the Navy has also made significant contributions to the country's reform and opening up and safeguarding world peace and development.

Hu Jintao and other leaders attended a gala show celebrating the progress of the Chinese Navy over the past six decades.
