A1: Today's agenda is highlighted by Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie's meeting with several high-ranking officials of regional powers. This morning, the Defense minister met with Indian Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakashand. The theme of the talks between the two regional powers was finding common ground for further cooperation, and ironing out disputes.
On Tuesday, the Defense Minister also met with US chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead. The meetings were aimed at deepening exchanges and cooperation among naval forces of the two countries. The meeting with the US navy chiefs is also a practical move forward following in the spirit of the talks between Chinese President Hu Jintao and US President Barack Obama to forge positive Sino-US relations.
Also on the military ties between China and the US, the Defense minister met with the descendants of General Joseph Warren Stilwell, the chief of Staff of the Allied Forces in China during the second world war, and an old friend of China during the Japanese invasion.
Today the Defense Minister also told reporters that China has a vast maritime territory, and it's the duty of his forces to safeguard the marine sovereignty of China. He added that China will push forward its navy building efforts in an overall way.
Also, Qingdao is to open the navy fleet to the public today. Citizens here will be able to get on board and view the Chinese warships, which will also be open to officials and soldiers from foreign vessels.
