Meanwhile, the first fleet is on its way home, after successfully accomplishing its tasks.

It has completed 41 missions, protecting 212 ships from the threat of piracy.

The fleet dealt effectively with unfamiliar seas and potentially dangerous pirates. The warships accompanied merchant ships and rescued several of them from pirates. Helicopter patrols were also used to drive pirates away.

Yao Junbiao, commander of 1st Naval Fleet in Gulf of Aden, said, "This is the first cross-ocean drill conducted by Chinese naval vessels, helicopters and special units. The troops involved have learned from this mission, and they're now more capable of operating military tasks."

Ships from China, Greece and Italy are among those to have benefited from Chinese naval assistance in the Gulf of Aden.
