Obama also extended a hand to Nicaragua's President Daniel Ortega, a leader that former US President Ronald Reagan tried to drive from power.
Ortega expressed skepticism about the new US president.
Daniel Ortega, Nicaragua's President, said, "In regard to relations with the United States, I want to believe, but as Saint Thomas says, until I see it, I won't believe it."
Obama said on Friday that his administration wants better cooperation with the Americas. He promised a new agenda and new style in relations.
At his first Summit of the Americas, Obama is taking part in a series of plenary sessions, group gatherings and one-on-one meetings.
Many countries have welcomed his commitment.
The three-day summit will end on Sunday. Leaders are discussing ways to counter the global financial crisis, develop energy resources and tackle the dangers of climate change and arms- and drugs-trafficking.
