WATCH VIDEO

US President Barack Obama and 27 other heads of state or government will attend.

The French Interior Minister, Michelle Alliot Marie, said it was "the biggest security operation on French soil."

NATO secretary-general, Laap De Hoop Scheffer, said that he hoped the summit would secure financial support for the Afghan National Army.

Laap De Hoop Scheffer said, "What is very important that is not directly the summit only but also the big meeting in the Hague is that a trust fund for the sustainability of the Afghan National Army is filled with money and not primarily by NATO allies but with all those nations committed to Afghanistan."

The summit, which marks the NATO's 60th anniversary, will take place on Friday and Saturday. Over a thousand journalists are expected to cover the event.

Forty-thousand demonstrators will wage protests in Strasbourg, Kehl and Baden Baden.
