The South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman said the DPRK notified South Korea of the decision by fax through the joint inter-Korean industrial complex.

The decision came at the end of joint military drills involving 26 thousand US troops and over 50 thousand South Korean soldiers. The DPRK repeatedly voiced its protests against the joint military drills, calling for their cancellation.

On March 9th, the DPRK announced it would cut off the inter-Korean military communication channel. That resulted in delays for South Korean employees and trucks that attempted to travel across inter-Korean borders.
