BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) -- Tibet has applied to deploy more security forces according to the region's needs, a top regional official said here Friday afternoon.

Tibet covers a large territory, and the current deployment of police, armed police, border defense forces is simply not enough, Qiangba Puncog, chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region government, told reporters at a panel discussion of lawmakers from Tibet.

Some townships in the region even do not have police stations, he said on the sidelines of the annual session of the national legislature.

The regional government applied to the central authorities for deployment of more armed police when it made the 11th five-year regional development plan (years ago), he said.

Deployment of armed police in Tibet is no exceptional practice, as they are deployed in all other Chinese provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, said Kang Jinzhong, political commissar of the Tibet Armed Police Division.
