Special Report:   Israel airstrikes in Gaza

Britain's Secretary of State for International Development has said he was horrified by the scale of the human suffering in Gaza.

Douglas Alexander was on a visit to Gaza City on Sunday to assess the damage after Israel's 22-day offensive at the end of last year.

He was on his way to Egypt for an international donors' conference to recruit funds for the reconstruction of Gaza.

Alexander has pledged 13 million pounds to support immediate rebuilding efforts. And he has called on Israel to open border crossings to allow aid in.

Also touring Gaza was the World Bank's Managing Director Jose Daboub. Daboub said that in the last 12 months, the World Bank has channeled 280 million dollars through a trust fund.
