Special Report:   Israel airstrikes in Gaza

Egypt has begun letting students, third-country residents and medical patients stranded in Gaza pass through its border crossing.

500 students studying abroad and 500 others with valid residency permits for Egypt or other countries have passed through the Rafah Border Crossing.

On Monday, 800 medical cases will be allowed to cross into Egypt. Meanwhile, on Sunday morning, people carrying suitcases in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis boarded buses headed for Rafah.

Egypt sealed the border after Hamas took full control of Gaza in June 2007. It has occasionally opened the passage for limited periods. Rafah is Gaza's main gateway to the outside world.
