The ministry is warning civilian ships to raise their guard as the peak period of hijacking by Somali pirates is approaching. It says civilian ships should improve their self defense capacity and cooperate closely with the navy.

Merchant ships travelling in the waters off the Somali coast need to apply for a naval escort seven days in advance. The navy's supply ship in the region stocked up on fuel, water, food and other goods in the port of Aden for the first time over the weekend.
