AMMAN, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's King Abdullah II on Saturday voiced optimism about U.S. government's "aggressive" diplomatic efforts to push peace between the Israelis and Palestinians, according a statement released by the Royal Hashemite Court.

The statement said the king made the remarks to Al Arabiya Channel following his meeting with U.S. president's Middle East envoy George Mitchell.

"We are still in the beginning, but I am optimistic after the meeting. I think Americans are serious when it comes to the future of Palestine and the Palestinian state," he said.

"If we want to serve the Palestinian people, then we should give time to the Arab-Islamic initiative and to the new U.S. administration to develop its strategy," added the king. "The U.S. working plan needs few months to crystallize."

Mitchell visited Jordan on Saturday and then flew to Saudi Arabia. So far, Mitchell has visited Egypt, Israel and the West Bank.
