Special Report:   Israel airstrikes in Gaza

AMMAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Jordan will support any Arab consensus regarding Israel's attacks against Gaza in the upcoming Arab summit called for by Qatar, local daily The Jordan Times reported on Wednesday.

"It would support Arab consensus, in case it is achieved, on the Arab summit" called for by Qatar to discuss the Israeli onslaught on Gaza, Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications Nasser Judeh said on Tuesday.

The kingdom, he said, supports all Arab and international efforts aiming to "end the unjust Israeli aggression on Gaza and protect the Palestinian people."

Qatar has sent invitations to all the Arab countries to hold a special Arab summit in its capital Doha next Friday to discus current situation in Gaza.

According to media reports, 14 Arab states have accepted Qatar's invitation, a number enough to hold an emergency session under the Arab League's charter.

But the two heavyweights in the Arab world, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, have announced earlier Tuesday that they are not in favor of the meeting in Qatar.

Instead, Egypt said on Tuesday it prefers the emergency Arab summit on the situation of the embattled Gaza Strip to be held in Kuwait on the eve of an Arab economic summit in the Kuwaiti capital next week.

More than 930 people in the impoverished Gaza Strip have been reportedly killed and some 4,100 others wounded since the launch of the Israeli raid on Gaza on Dec. 27, 2008, which it said was aimed at revenging Hamas rocket and mortar attacks.
