In Pakistan a suicide bomber pretending to need help with his car has killed 30 people and wounded 15 others.

Sunday's attack occurred at a polling station in the northwestern town of Buner.

Police say the attacker, who apparently operated alone, may have parked his car and detonated the explosives in front of a school, where the polling station was set up.

Voters were casting ballots in a by-election for a National Assembly seat. Buner borders a valley where Pakistan's army has waged an offensive against insurgents for more than a year.

Analysts say the blast underscores concerns that militant violence near the Afghan border is likely to escalate, now that Pakistan is shifting troops away from the region toward India.
