Iran's Defense Minister has announced the country has successfully test-fired a new generation of long range missile.

The surface-to-surface missile uses solid fuel, making it more accurate than its predecessors.

Mostafa Mahammad Najjar said the Sajjil missile has a range of about 2,000 kilometers. Solid fuel missiles are more accurate than Iran's liquid fuel missiles of similar range.

The defense minister said the missile is a defensive weapon and not a response to threats against Iran.

But analysts say the Sajjil missile is easily capable of striking Israel and can target as far as southeastern Europe.

The US State Department said the missile tests are not good for the stability of the region and offer more proof that US plans to construct a missile shield in Europe are critical to international security.
