Major supermarket chains have emptied their shelves of all products made by the disgraced Sanlu Group. The only milk powder for sale is from brands shown to be melamine-free.

The quick response comes as melamine, a toxic chemical, was found in batches of baby formula from 22 manufacturers around the country.

Supermarkets reacted quickly when they received word about tainted brands.

Supermarket sales staff, said, "We cleared all the contaminated milk powder on the very same morning when headquarters called us."

Many supermarkets say Sanlu dairy products for infants have sold poorly for a long time. Sales personnel say most people choose to buy imported products.
