China says nearly 80 percent of baby formula products made by dairy companies are safe, after a nationwide inspection launched in the wake of the Sanlu scandal. Senior officials taking charge of the investigation into the melamine-tainted milk powder produced by Sanlu Group gave an update this morning on the latest developments.

China's top quality inspector Li Changjiang said out of the 109 diary producers checked, 22 has been found to have produced batches of milk tainted with melamine.

The chemical, used to make plastic and other industrial products, is rich in nitrogen ... an element often used to measure protein levels, and can be used to disguise diluted milk.

Officials have promised measures to deal with the tainted products and their producers.
