British Conservative candidate Boris Johnson was elected mayor of London, ending Ken Livingstone's eight-year reign at City Hall.

The result put further pressure on Prime Minister Gordon Brown after his party suffered its worst council election results in four decades. Johnson made a plea for unity in the city after the fiercely contested campaign.

Boris Johnson, Mayor Elect of London said "I want to build on the achievements of the last administration and I want us all to put aside any personal, personal rancor, pronounced correctly, or feelings of ideological, and ideological disputes we may have. Put them aside, Let's all put them aside and work together to build on the very considerable achievements of the last Mayor of London and make sure that we create a London that is greater still."
