British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has suffered a disastrous electoral result. Opposition Conservative candidate, Boris Johnson, was elected mayor of London on Friday, defeating Labor incumbent, Ken Livingstone.

Johnson will be in charge of an 11 billion pound budget covering public transport, police and fire services in a city of some 7.5 million people. He will also oversee preparations for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The outcome followed a catastrophic result for Prime Minister Brown and his governing Labor Party in local elections across England and Wales. Brown was forced to make a pledge to heed the harsh verdict from voters, after his party lost London's City Hall and more than 300 municipal council seats.
