Recent freezing weather has disrupted water supplies and damaged crops in Southwest China's Yunnan Province. But the rebuilding process is well underway.

In northeastern Yunnan's Yuanjiawan Village, most waterpipes were damaged by last month's freezing weather. Over 300 families had to rely on water from wells.

As the weather improves, villagers are replacing the damaged pipes and wrapping them with straw to protect them.

So far one third of the families in the village have water again, and the rest will have water in about 10 days.

The cold weather has severely damaged crops. Local authorities have sent around one thousand agrotechnicians to help make up for the losses.

Wang Bin, director of Xuanwei Bureau of Agriculture, Yunnan, said, "Broad bean crops like this can no longer yield fruit. So we need to remove them quickly, plough the earth and make preparations for the planting of spring crops."

The local farmers are optimistic.

Villager Zhao Yunxue said, "Of course we will go on planting despite the disaster. And we are confident enough to handle it with the help of technology."

The agrotechnicians help with accelerating the germination of sprouts so they become resistant to the cold.
