Special Report:   Winter Storm Relief

Local governments are helping people rebuild their homes damaged in the snow storm. And the central government is telling them to pay attention to land management in the process.

The house's owner says he didn't expect so many people would come to help him. And now he is confident that the repaired house will be even better than the original.

This is a village in east China's Jiangxi province. The houses here are built with earth. As the melting snow penetrated the walls, many houses are no longer safe to live in. Employees of the local government came to the village, urging people to vacate the houses.

Village resident Li Shengyou says he didn't know his house was dangerous. The local authorities are helping people like Li move into new homes that are part of a relocation project launched last summer.

In Gulin county, in southwest China's Sichuan province, the roof of this house collapsed after a tree fell on it. The local authorities are trying to help. The house's owner says he didn't expect so many people would come to help him. And now he is confident that the repaired house will be even better than the original. The county is one of the most seriously affected areas.

One government employee has been allocated to each household. And villagers whose house was completely destroyed are entitled to a subsidy of 6,000 yuan, or over 800 US dollars.

The Ministry of Civil Affairs says local governments must assist all households. The Ministry plans to finish house rebuilding by the end of March, and restore all facilities and services by the end of June.
