This year's theme is industrialization, but the crisis in Kenya is dominating talks.

On Thursday, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis, and said that increased emergency assistance must be provided by the international community to alleviate suffering.

Ban also intends to repeat last year's summit talks with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir about a joint AU-UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur.

And Ban Ki-moon will visit Kenya this week to bolster efforts aimed at ending the political crisis there.

A statement from the UN office in Nairobi says Ban will support efforts made by his predecessor, Kofi Annan, who is trying to broker peace between the feuding parties.
