135 Chinese peacekeepers arrives in Darfur for UN tasks

A contingent of Chinese peacekeepers who arrived in Sudan's Darfur region over the weekend, have met with their African Union counterparts in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state.

The 135 Chinese peacekeepers are the vanguards of the Chinese engineering units for Darfur. This is the first batch of peacekeepers arriving in the region to implement UN Security Council Resolution 17-69. The resolution authorizes the deployment of a 26,000 African Union-UN peacekeeping force.

Chinese Lieutenant Colonel Shanguan Linhong says the main tasks of the Chinese peacekeepers include building camps, roads,bridges, and digging wells. They will also start other projects in preparation for the deployment of peacekeepers from other countries.
