China´s 24th expedition near equator

The ship carrying China's 24th expedition to Antarctica has reached waters just above the equator as it continues its journey south.

The vessel has left stormy conditions near the Philippines and is now entering a calm zone. Experts say the zone is called the equatorial calm belt, which is formed between a subtropical high-pressure zone and an equatorial low-pressure zone.

The expedition will study the impact of climate change and continental shifts on Antarctica.
