UN welcomes China´s decision to send engineering troops to Darfur

The UN, has welcomed China's decision to send a unit of engineering troops to Sudan's war-torn Darfur region. The Under-Secretary General for UN Peacekeeping Operations made that comment on Wednesday, after meeting with Chinese officials in Beijing.
The engineering unit is scheduled to leave for Darfur at the end of this week. They will set up camps and make practical arrangement on the ground, so that other UN peacekeeping units can be deployed more effectively.
Jean-Marie Guehenno, Under-Sec'y Gen of UN Peacekeeping Operations,said, "Having China involved in the variety of peacekeeping operations is important to us. I think it derives on a broader calculation that China is a global power involved in all continents now through links of economy, through links of trade. China has a stake in the stability of the international system. To protect that stability, participation in peacekeeping is indeed a good investment."
