The State Council has marked the anniversary with a grand reception.

President Hu Jintao and other top leaders arrived at the reception at the Great Hall of the People on Sunday.

The celebrations began with the national anthem.

Premier Wen Jiabao delivered his festival greetings to people of all ethnic groups in China. And he also expressed his appreciation of foreign friends, especially those who have supported China's course of modernization.

The premier stressed the government's determination to advance reform and opening-up. He cited the upcoming CPC congress, which is proposed to convene on Oct 15, as "a congress of great importance to be held at a time when China's reform and development have entered a crucial stage."

Premier Wen Jiabao says China will stick to a "one China, two systems" policy with Hong Kong and Macao to ensure long-term prosperity and stability. He also says the mainland is willing to make joint efforts with compatriots in Taiwan to achieve the reunification of China as soon as possible.

Wen said "We will continue to work with all the Taiwan compatriots to oppose and repulse separatist activities for "Taiwan independence" and advance the great cause of China's peaceful reunification."

More than 1500 people attended the reception.
