This morning's flag raising ceremony in the Chinese capital at Tiananmen Square attracted 120-thousands of visitors from around the country. Today the People's Republic of China celebrates its fifty-eighth anniversary.

The first of October is not only China's national day, but also the beginning of a week long national holiday. However, as you can see, the early hour and rainy weather have not stopped people from flocking to the world's largest city square on this chilly autumn morning. Fifty eight years ago, the founding ceremony of the People's Republic of China was also held here. By witnessing this traditional ceremony, people both remember the past and look to the future.

The guard of honor marches out of the Tiananmen Gate Tower, each step with solemnity and dignity. People from all over the country were waiting, many having spent the whole rainy night here...for this awe-inspiring experience.

At ten past six in the morning, China's national flag was hoisted up the pole, just as the sun was rising.
