Israeli strike kills Gaza militant

Casualties continue to mount in the Gaza Strip as Israel conducts more strikes. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak says a large-scale operation against Gaza is becoming necessary and should be carried out very soon.

In Gaza City, four Gaza militants were killed when an Israeli tank fired a missile on their jeep. Hamas says the dead are members of the Army of Islam, a Hamas breakaway group with unclear ties to Hamas. The group was believed to be involved in the kidnapping of a BBC journalist and the capture of an Israeli soldier.

In another incident, Israeli tanks entered the north Gazan town of Beit Hanoun and fired shells, in response to rocket and mortar fire from the area earlier in the day. Hospital officials say four people were killed and at least 11 wounded.
