Fujimori is now awaiting trial on charges of corruption and human rights abuses, including death-squad killings of 25 people.

Human rights groups have cheered the extradition, with some calling it an important step toward ending impunity in Latin America.

The Supreme Court president says Peru will rise to the challenge and provide a fair trial.

Supereme Court President, Francisco Tabara said, "I think it's an opportunity for the Peruvian justice system to reaffirm its autonomy and independence. And I reiterate that we're guaranteeing the former president will receive a just trial."

Officials say Fujimori will be transferred to a prison guard school in Callao where he will remain until he is tried.
